Alamo City native, James Young, has been collaborating with We Say Yes Homes to bring the shipping container home he says is “like living in artwork” to 910 Wyoming Street in the Historic Gardens neighborhood.
The 1,300-square foot home made of four steel containers features three bedrooms, two restrooms, a living room, kitchen and dining room. Gonzales and Young both mentioned one of the home’s main selling points, an “amazing” rooftop terrace with “phenomenal” views of downtown.
Considering San Antonio’s sometimes sweltering summer temperatures, Gonzales and Young said the ensuring ample insulation was an important part of constructing the steel build. The designer said foam panels are used as a “solid insulator” throughout to maintain the home’s central air and heat.
Young, who has built about 200 traditional homes, said container homes are typically produced off site then arranged at properties using a crane. The process usually takes about 45 days.
However, the Wyoming Street property plans were altered due to surrounding trees the team opted not to touch and instead built on site with the welding help of Matthew Montez.
“We did our very best not to touch the trees,” Young said. “We were really concerned about the footprint we would leave behind.”
Gonzales and Young said community feedback from neighbors and local designers has been positive, with many asking for tours of the home.
