We’ve seen shipping container structures come in numerous structures, and this one in Johannesburg, South Africa, is refreshingly clear. Engineering firm LOT-EK planned a six-story private structure from 140 upcycled shipping containers stacked over one another.

The engineers split the complex into two areas—one blue, one green—that inclination outward to make a triangular yard between them. Inhabitants explore the structure through an outside hallway that over looks the yard and is likewise utilized as shared gallery.

The lofts, which range from 300 to 600 square feet, are open arrangement with recovered wood floors and clean white dividers. The container’s metal siding stays as the roof, giving the spaces a mechanical feel.
